My form of performance art is a unique approach. It tends to blend installation artwork, sound exploration and visuals created with movement, masks and dialogue.
My main influences have been studying ancient Hula. Ancient Hula is very different from modern hula that is commonly seen. It was developed before contact with foreigners. The main idea around Hula was the poetry, spirituality, storytelling and a verbal history. The dancer embellished the poetry. I feel this is my foundation, although I have moved away with the limited traditional guidelines. I mainly use the concept and the idea of using the body to tell stories.
The performances of Laurie Anderson and the experimental staging of the contemporary Dutch Operas in Amsterdam have also influenced me. Robert Wilson’s productions have left an impact on me as well as Steve Reich operas. Perhaps the most influential performance group is the Japanese group, “Dumb Type”.
My performance art has always been a vehicle to explore and express
ideas in non-conventional ways. The work itself is very experimental with sound environments, non-dance movement, staging, kinetic stage sets, non-traditional costuming, and projected video. I have used untried methods to create atmospheres and environments that communicate feelings, ideas and beliefs.
I feel the subjects, that I choose to explore, are reflective to current attitudes of our times. I like exploring the obvious under currents that are often hidden in our societies.
The very nature of my work and subjects push boundaries and explore ideas in other perspectives.
